Vitamin C 1000mg Tablets in Sri Lanka: How to Choose
What 1000mg actually means
The nutrient reference value (NRV) for vitamin C on UK and EU labels is 80mg a day. A 1000mg tablet therefore carries about 1,250% of that figure. The label will say so, and it is normal for a high strength product. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
A bigger number is not automatically better. NHS advice is that 1,000mg or more a day can cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and wind in some people, because the body only absorbs part of a large dose. If you have not taken vitamin C supplements before, 1000mg a day is a sensible ceiling to start from.
1000mg or 1500mg?
British Shop stocks both strengths, and they suit different people.
- WeightWorld Vitamin C 1000mg has 1000mg per tablet. A pack holds 180 vegan, non-GMO tablets, a 6 month supply at one a day. It is made with L-ascorbic acid plus rosehips and bioflavonoids, and the tablets are easy to break if you prefer a smaller dose.
- Vitamin C 1500mg has 1500mg per tablet. A pack holds 180 vegan tablets, also a 6 month supply. Because this is above the 1,000mg level mentioned by the NHS, it is one to ask a pharmacist about first, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
If you are unsure, the 1000mg tablet is the easier starting point, and you can halve it.
What to check on the label
- Dose per tablet. Compare mg per tablet, not just the pack size.
- Form. L-ascorbic acid is the standard form used in most supplements.
- Extras. Rosehips and bioflavonoids are common additions. They are not essential.
- Diet suitability. Check for vegan and gluten-free marks if they matter to you.
- Cost per day. Divide the pack price by the number of days it lasts. A 180 tablet pack at one a day lasts about six months.
Storing tablets in Sri Lanka's climate
Heat and humidity shorten the life of supplements. Keep the pack tightly closed, away from the kitchen stove and bathroom steam, and out of direct sunlight. A cupboard in a cool room is better than a sunny shelf.
Who should speak to a professional first
Check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking high dose vitamin C if you have had kidney stones, have a condition affecting iron levels, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take regular medicines. Vitamin C also increases iron absorption, which is useful for some people and not for others.
