Sun Protection for Women, Men and Children: Sunscreen, Sunglasses and Hats
For men, the same protection standards apply. Choose a sun cream you can spread evenly, remembering exposed ears, the back of the neck and any thinning or bald areas of the scalp. When buying sunglasses, look for UV400 or 100% UVA and UVB protection, rather than judging protection by how dark the lenses appear. Close-fitting or wraparound frames help limit sunlight entering from the sides. A broad-brimmed hat gives more coverage than a baseball cap, and a lightweight, closely woven top helps protect the shoulders and arms. These choices follow NHS sun-safety advice.
For children aged six months and older, choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 50 sun cream, with a fragrance-free formula if their skin is sensitive. Buy properly labelled UV-protective sunglasses in a comfortable child-sized frame, alongside a broad-brimmed or legionnaire-style hat and a covering top, ideally labelled UPF 50+. Reapply sunscreen regularly and make shade breaks part of outdoor play, especially around midday. Keep babies under six months out of direct sunlight, relying mainly on shade and protective clothing. The American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance for children explains how protection needs change with age.
