Magnesium Supplements in Sri Lanka: Three Glycinate Products Compared
What magnesium does
Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function, to the normal function of the nervous system, to electrolyte balance and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
The three products
- Metagenics Magnesium Glycinate 100mg: 100mg of magnesium per tablet, 120 tablets per pack. The brand was formerly Nutri Advanced.
- Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate 120mg: 120mg of magnesium per capsule, 180 capsules per pack, taken in divided doses with meals according to the label.
- WeightWorld Magnesium Glycinate 4-in-1 Complex: a 4-in-1 complex of glycinate, citrate, malate and taurate giving 400mg of elemental magnesium per serving of two capsules, with 90mg of leucine. A pack holds 180 vegan capsules, a 3 month supply.
How to compare them
- Elemental magnesium. Compare the elemental figure per serving, not the total weight of magnesium compounds.
- Serving size. One product is per tablet, another per capsule, another per two capsules. Work out the dose per day and the cost per day.
- Form. Glycinate is a magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine and is commonly chosen for gentleness. The 4-in-1 mixes four forms.
Cautions
Too much magnesium from supplements can cause diarrhoea. People with kidney problems should speak to a doctor before taking it, and it can interact with some medicines, including certain antibiotics, so check with a pharmacist.
